Coastal Carolina Winery in Pawleys Island

Visiting a winery in every state is a goal of mine. Therefore, whenever vacationing in a state still on my list, I always see if there is a winery nearby. During our recent trip to the beaches of South Carolina, I found Coastal Carolina Winery in Pawleys Island.

To kick off our kids’ summer break from school, we packed up the car and headed north to South Carolina. The main purposed of the trip was for a cousin’s wedding. However, seeing my husband and I both have jobs that we can work remote, we decided to make it a week-long trip instead of a quick weekend.

Pawleys Island is a resort beach town just south of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. We spent most of the week enjoying the beach, the pool, and the local cuisine. Then we decided it was time to see if there was a winery in the area.

We lucked out and found one right down the road from our resort. Plans were then made to visit Coastal Carolina Winery in Pawleys Island to enjoy some local wines.

The Winery

During our visit, we learned that Coastal Carolina Winery has two locations. Their newest location is in Pawleys Island, and the original is in Myrtle Beach.

The winery uses grapes grown in North and South Carolina to make their wines. While they might not have their own vineyard, they do make some small batches of wine right on site.

While you can enjoy a tasting while visiting and purchase your favorite bottle to take home, you can also buy wine by the glass to enjoy on site. At the Pawleys Island location, a glass of wine runs between $5 and $6, and a wine slushy was $7.

The Tasting

For $5, you can taste seven of the Coastal Carolina Winery wines.

On the day of our visit, there were 15 varieties on the tasting list, not including the wine slushy flavors. The wine slushy (which you could include in your tasting selections) were made from select Coastal Carolina Winery wines.

The seven wines that I selected to taste were Chardonnay, Blackberry, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Merlot, White Syrah, and Riptide Red Port.

Overall, I enjoyed each of the wines.

While I am typically not a fan of ports, I decided to add one to my selection seeing they have three port varieties.

I can say that I was pleasantly surprised. While I would probably never order a glass of the Riptide Red Port, it was the first port I have tried at a tasting that I liked enough to finish the whole sample.

The other wine that surprised me was the Blackberry wine. The Blackberry wine contains no grapes and is made just from blackberries. I usually find non-grape wines too sweet for more than a quick taste.

However, I quickly learned why the Blackberry wine is their top-selling wine. With no added sugar, it was delicious! We enjoyed it so much that we decided to take a bottle home so we can enjoy a full glass or two later.

One More State Down

Coastal Carolina Winery in Pawleys Island gave us an excellent opportunity to cross another state off our 50 state wine tour. While they might not have an onsite vineyard to complete the winery experience, we enjoyed the tasting.

If you are going to be in the Pawleys Island or Myrtle Beach areas, a visit to this local winery should be on your to-do list.
